Albert Rotenberg approached the problem in an objective, investigative manner: during nearly half a century was carried out almost two thousand interviews (research, not clinical) with a large number of scientists and artists, among them Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners. Only on the basis of such insight, demystified a number of popular shows which are painted in terms of creativity and madness. Rotenberg reveals that creative people are not fundamentally different from the others - except for the commitment of the act of creation. He also says that there is a certain type of creative personalities, as well as "madness" is not a romantic - and romanticized! - A prerequisite for creativity, as we consider even some influential contemporary psychiatrists.
Moreover, Rotenberg offers us insight into the structure of the creative process, in the moment when the mind gives birth to new ideas. Hence the Creativity and Madness brilliant window into the act of creation, ranging from Einstein's image that led to the theory of relativity to the deep, unconscious conflicts that spawned beautiful artistic metaphor.
The author could not resist their clinical interests, and the book closes, and several "case studies": the chapter on Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Strindberg and Eugene O'Neill.
